March 29, 1973 was the last day U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam. The day honors the 9 million Americans who served during the Vietnam War era (1955-1975) and the 58,281 who did not return.
The day is very significant to Vietnam veterans. It is significant because we were NOT welcomed home. Many returning veterans were harassed in airports, some were spat upon and called “baby killers.” We refused to wear our uniforms in public and hid our military service in our civilian careers.
There is nothing wrong with the sentiment “Thank You For Your Service,” BUT if you wish to demonstrate that you understand and empathize with the sacrifice we made for our fellow soldiers, for our families, for our country and for you…then next time you greet a Vietnam veteran say “Welcome Home” and watch the reaction. Those words will move us. It’s a game-changer.
